About
Hi, I'm Dan Allen
Former CFO and CEO, multi-time founder, and retired CPA. I write CFO Resource for the finance people doing real work at small and mid-sized businesses.
My background
I started my career in audit at Grant Thornton LLP, where I spent roughly a decade and became a Senior Assurance Manager.
In 1999 I founded ITS Logistics in Reno, Nevada, and led it first as CFO and later as CEO. Together with a great team, we grew it into one of North America's top-ranked third-party logistics providers before its sale in March 2026.
I also co-founded Tavern Craft, a Reno-based beverage distributor, and The CFO Group, a financial consulting firm. Today I advise operating leaders on putting AI to work through Holaris Advisors.
I hold a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Nevada, Reno, and I'm a retired CPA.
Why I started CFO Resource
As a CFO, the work that ate my weeks wasn't the thinking. It was the building: pricing models and forecasts that took hours to format, board presentations rebuilt every quarter, contracts and insurance proposals to read line by line, SOPs that took forever to write and were hard to find once they existed, and close spreadsheets that too often had math errors.
AI can now do a large share of that work. But most finance teams don't know which tool to use, how to set it up safely, or how to check what it produces. Generic AI advice doesn't help much, because finance work has to be right, and it has to be defensible to a reviewer, a board or an auditor.
What you'll find here
- The library: step-by-step AI workflows for specific finance tasks, each with a prompt, the setup and a reviewer checklist.
- Templates: starting with a free, formula-driven month-end reporting package.
- The newsletter: one practical workflow a week.
How I think about AI in finance
Fast is only useful if it's auditable. Every workflow here assumes a person reviews the output, and tells you what to check and what never to paste into an AI tool.
